How to reach Kainchi Dham

Kainchi Dham sits on the Nainital–Almora road (NH-109) in the Kumaon hills, between Bhowali and Almora. There's no railway station or airport at the site itself — every route funnels through Nainital or Kathgodam first. Here's what each option actually looks like.

Distance from major towns

Figures below are road distance and typical drive time in normal traffic — hill roads add time, so treat these as a floor, not a promise.

By road from Delhi

This is how most visitors arrive — either self-driving, or in a hired car or tempo traveller. Two routes are commonly used.

  1. 1
    Via Moradabad and Rampur
Delhi → Ghaziabad → Moradabad → Rampur → Haldwani → Kathgodam → Kainchi Dham. The most-used route, roughly 320–340 km, generally taken in 7–9 hours including stops.
  2. 2
    Via Kotdwar and Ramnagar
Delhi → Meerut → Kotdwar → Ramnagar → Haldwani → Kainchi Dham, using NH334 and NH109. A little longer, but passes closer to the Corbett landscape if you want to break the drive there.
  3. 3
    The last stretch
From Bhowali, the road climbs through pine and deodar forest along the Nainital–Almora road. Parking is roadside and fills up quickly on weekends and during the June mela — arriving before mid-morning helps.

For a family or group, a tempo traveller is usually more comfortable than a sedan for the full Delhi run — it's a long day either way, so most groups either start very early or break the journey overnight in Nainital or Bhowali.

By rail

Kathgodam is the nearest railhead — the line ends there, so it's the last stop for every train from the plains.

  1. 1
    Getting to Kathgodam
Direct trains run from New Delhi (Shatabdi Express, Ranikhet Express, Uttaranchal Sampark Kranti Express), and from Lucknow (Bagh Express, Kathgodam Garib Rath). From Mumbai, options are limited to a weekly service.
  2. 2
    Kathgodam to Kainchi Dham
About 37–45 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by taxi. Prepaid taxis and shared cabs are available right outside the station — most also go via Bhowali.

By air

There's no airport close to Kainchi Dham — flying gets you to the plains, and the hill drive still has to happen.

  1. 1
    Pantnagar Airport (PGH)
The nearest airport, about 68–71 km away. IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet run flights from Delhi (roughly 2h 15m). From here it's a 1.5–2 hour taxi to Kainchi Dham via Bhowali.
  2. 2
    Bareilly Airport
A second option with limited connectivity, around 145 km from Kainchi Dham — usually only worth it if it lines up better with your travel dates than Pantnagar.
